How to download data

How to preview and download data from this site.

Find a dataset and download data

  1. Search or browse for a dataset.

  2. Open the dataset page.

  3. Check the description, publisher, last updated date and available file formats.

  4. Choose a file.

  5. Select Download to save a copy of the file.

Previewing data before you download

Select Explore to preview a file before you download it. You can view, filter and select data in your browser.

Use this to confirm that a data file contains the data you expect.

Filter the data

  1. In ‘Explore’, select Filter to show filters above each column.

  2. Select a column filter.

  3. Select the values you want to keep.

  4. Select Apply.

You can also type in the box at the top to narrow your selection. The table will update to show only matching rows. You can use the filter buttons on other columns to narrow your selection further.

When the table shows the data you need, select Export to download the selection.

Filtering data is useful when you only need part of a data file.

Large datasets

Some datasets on this site are large and may contain many files. Individual data files can also be large and may contain many rows or columns.

If a data file looks incomplete when you open it, your spreadsheet tool may have a row limit.

In this case you can try:

  • using ‘Explore’ to filter the data down to only what you need

  • using a different spreadsheet tool

  • accessing the data using the API (Application Programming Interface)

If a file will not download or open

If your download does not start, refresh the page and select the file again.

If the file will not open, check you have software that supports the format.
