dct:description "This dataset presents the weekly number of all deaths, deaths involving COVID-19, and deaths involving influenza registered in Scotland. Tables for this publication are also available on the [NRS website](https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/publications/deaths-registered-weekly-in-scotland). Data for 2025 and 2026 are provisional.

Figures are based on date of registration. In Scotland deaths must be registered within 8 days although in practice, the average time between death and registration is around 3 days. See the [NRS website](https://webarchive.nrscotland.gov.uk/20240326182002/https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/statistics-and-data/statistics/statistics-by-theme/vital-events/general-background-information/births-and-deaths-days-until-registration) for more information on days between occurrence and registration.

Figures for deaths involving COVID-19 and deaths involving influenza are provided on two bases:

- *underlying cause* -cases where it was the disease or injury which initiated the chain of morbid events leading directly to death, or was the accident/act which produced the fatal injury;
- *any mention* -i.e. whether it appeared to be the underlying cause of the death, or was just a factor which contributed to, or may have hastened, the occurrence of the death.

Every death has just one *underlying cause* code, and so is counted only once in figures which are produced on the *underlying cause* basis. A death may have several other causes coded as contributory factors, so could be counted several times in figures which are produced on the *any mention* base.

Deaths involving COVID-19 include any deaths where COVID-19 is mentioned on the death certificate, whether it is the underlying cause of death or a contributory condition. The ICD-10 codes U07.1, U07.2, U09.9 or U10.9 are used to identify deaths which involve COVID -19.

The ICD-10 codes J09 - J11 are used to identify deaths which involve influenza. Caution is advised when interpreting trends over time. Influenza may be under-documented as an underlying or contributory cause of death on certificates, and the degree to which this occurs may vary over time. It can be influenced by things such as the availability of testing, and the awareness of certifying doctors regarding current levels of infection/epidemics. More information can be found in this paper: [The impact of introducing ICD-10 on analysis of respiratory mortality trends in England and Wales](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/7253967_The_impact_of_introducing_ICD-10_on_analysis_of_respiratory_mortality_trends_in_England_and_Wales)

Data on deaths involving COVID-19 broken down by age and administrative area can be accessed from [Deaths involving COVID-19 on statistics.gov,scot](http://statistics.gov.scot/data/deaths-involving-coronavirus-covid-19) . Since March 2026 we stopped publishing these breakdowns.
" ;

Weeks used by ONS and NISRA run from Saturday to Friday whereas NRS uses ISO8601 standard weeks which run from Monday to Sunday.
