Data quality
Completeness
This data brings together in one place all orders at local authority level which make up the category "social work orders".
Uniqueness
Not assessed
Consistency
Community payback orders were introduced on 1 February 2011. Numbers were not collected for the year 2010-11 due the very small number of orders which would have finished in that year. Fiscal work orders were introduced nationally on 1 April 2015. Data was not collected from 2016-17 onwards for community service, probation or supervised attendance orders due the small number of orders involved. The figures for 'orders not completed/discharged' for 2012-13 and 2013-14 include some orders for which the reason for termination was not known. From March 2025, there is no longer any data provided for "total social work orders".
Timeliness
These statistics are normally updated in the January after the data year in question.
Validity
These statistics help provide trends related to the workload of orders which local authorities deal with.
Accuracy
These statistics are considered of good quality as they come from recording systems which local authorities use for case management and internal monitoring. Checks are made to ensure any major differences from previous years are explainable.
Quality management
Extensive quality assurance is conducted to ensure the data received from local authorities is as accurate as possible.
