To take into account backdating and delays between applications being authorised and payments being made, data cuts have been taken at least a month after each reporting period (e.g. data taken on 31 December 2020 to cover to end of November 2020). Later data cuts may include additional retrospective changes to application details, including corrections to details in the case management system, and changes that have resulted from redeterminations and appeals.

Client numbers have been rounded to the nearest five for disclosure control. Figures may not sum due to rounding.

In this dataset the label 'Best Start Grant' has been used to cover both Best Start Grant (including Pregnancy and Baby payment, Early Learning payment and School Age payment) and Best Start Foods.

Equality data is collected for online, mail and telephone applications. Mail and telephone Equality Monitoring and Feedback forms are collected through Questback. Data is entered manually by client advisors, and can therefore contain some typographical errors. For some clients postcode and date of birth data were entered in incorrect columns, this has been corrected manually.

Mail and telephone equalities information was linked to application outcome data using the postcode and date of birth of the client. Clients that didn't have a postcode and/or date of birth recorded were identified and removed from the dataset as there was no other variable that could identify them in the application outcome information.

*Duplicates in records from Equality Monitoring and Feedback forms*

Clients are able to make multiple applications to Social Security Scotland. Data has been de-duplicated to retain only one equalities monitoring form per client that applied during each period and completed a form. Where multiple outcomes were available on different applications for an individual client, only the most recent outcome has been retained. The data presented here are therefore a sample of all clients making applications to Social Security Scotland.

*Clients that chose not to answer equalities questions*

A number of clients that completed an Equality Monitoring and Feedback form selected that they did not want to answer equalities questions. These clients were removed. Additionally, some clients did answer at least one equalities question but did not complete all of the equalities questions. These clients were retained in the dataset, but where an answer was missing they were counted in the 'Unknown' category for that question.
